Objectives of Symposium
Today, the world faces a troubling reality: self-centered nationalism is spreading among major powers, wars have broken out, and society appears to be moving backward toward increasing chaos and division. As Tokai Gakuen University celebrates its 30th anniversary, we will host a symposium titled "Tomoiki : Bridging a Divided World—Japanese Culture and Judo as Pathways to Global Peace" to explore the future of Tomoiki (symbiosis), the core philosophy of our educational mission. For this occasion, we are privileged to welcome four distinguished Full Members of the Club of Rome, with the generous support of the Club of Rome Japan. The Club of Rome has addressed critical global challenges for half a century and is renowned for its influential book The Limits to Growth, which sounded an alarm that resonated worldwide. Coordinated by Full Members Tomoyo Nonaka and Yoshitsugu Hayashi, Co-President Silvia Zimmermann, Michel Brousse—Ex- European Judo Champion and a world-leading historian of Judo—, Kosei Inoue—Judo Champion at Sydney Olympic games—, and Professor Shin Yamamoto, a scholar of Okinawan culture, will each share their insights on how Japanese art, Judo, and peripheric traditional culture can contribute to a new humanism, and envision what Tomoiki should look like in addressing today's challenges.
